District in Baden-Württemberg, Germany
The Rhein-Neckar-Kreis is a district in the northwest of Baden-Württemberg, Germany. The administrative headquarters are based in the city Heidelberg, which is a district-free city. As of , the district is the most populous in Baden-Württemberg.
History
[edit]The district was created in by merging the previous districts of Heidelberg, Mannheim and Sinsheim.
Geography
[edit]The district is named after the two main rivers which flow through the district, the Rhine and Neckar. The highest elevation is m near the m tall peak of the Odenwald mountain Stiefelhöhe, located near Heiligkreuzsteinach. The lowest elevation with 92 m is in Ilvesheim, located in the Neckar valley.

[edit]The district is governed by a district assembly (Kreistag) and a district executive (Landrat). The eligible voters of the district elect the Kreistag every 5 years. Etymology
The name Neckar may be derived from Nicarus and Neccarus from Celtic Nikros, meaning wild water or wild fellow. The grammatical gender of the name in German is masculine (der Neckar).

Over a length of 50 km, the Neckar breaks through the Odenwald, digs deep into the red sandstone, describes bends and loops, and still poses a thousand riddles to geologists today. Steep slopes rise directly from the riverbed, reaching heights of more than meters above the valley floor. Mighty rock faces have the warm red tone that we find at the castle and the Old Bridge in Heidelberg.
The Neckar is dammed today, a whole number of barrages transform into a tremendously long lake; the wildness is changed into an idyll. The Neckar has something dreamy about it; mountains, clouds, forests, castles, and old cities are reflected in its smooth water. But it is precisely this interaction of all those things that man loves and longs for that makes the Neckar a real river. And it is certainly no coincidence that at the beginning of this section of the valley lies the old imperial city of Bad Wimpfen, and just where the Neckar leaves the mountains again, the electoral city of Heidelberg.
